It is the power of these devices that make them so convenient
that we now take them for granted in our everyday lives.
In law enforcement today, one of the first things Police do is seize a suspect’s phone. They know that they will find details of
criminal associate’s, incriminating evidence, information concerning their
movements and communications to other people, among other things.
Even when we believe we have deleted text messages,
browsing history, pictures and video, this not actually the case.
Like your home PC, tablet or laptop, all data that has
been accessed and created on a mobile phone can be recovered. It just takes
time, and specialist software to locate it on the phones memory and piece it
all together in order for it to be read and viewed easily.
The retrieval of this data is technically complex and
requires an expert to forensically trace the missing data and present it in a
format that a lay person can understand it.
If you believe a
local phone shop can recover the data you require, think again, all they will
do is recover the data held on a SIM, which is normally the last 15 text
messages. Before you hand over the money, ask them what they can actually retrieve
from the phone’s memory.
The same goes for the detection of spy malware that may
be hidden on a mobile phone.
This mobile spyware allows a person to download software
onto the memory of a mobile and monitor the use of the device remotely. They
are able to read all text messages, see what numbers are dialed and received,
web sites and chat rooms visited and conversations that take place. The
software also allows the viewer to see photos on the phone, videos and in some
cases track the movements of the phone.
Finding this software is extremely difficult and requires
the services of a competent mobile phone analyser, as the software is often
buried within the phones memory in sub folders using Trojan horses.
Interestingly this software is readily available on the
web for as little as much as £50. But remember, it is illegal to intercept a person’s
mobile phone without their permission, and that includes reading their emails,
text messages and chat room conversations including What’s App and Facebook.
